Light up the road - Check your lights

Your car headlights are very important to help you stay safe on the roads! Not only do they help you see any obstacles that might be on the roads, they also make sure that other cars can see you. You might not have used them much during the summer months, so now’s the time to make sure they’re in tip-top shape. Dark nights and chilly mornings tell us that winter is well on the way – so it’s doubly important to make sure that you’ve checked them and they’re working as they should be (you can thank us later).

During the winter months, with all of the wet weather and dirt on the roads – your headlights can get dirty. Make sure you give them a clean – just with a damp cloth, or you can use your usual household glass cleaner if you like.

You’ll also need to check that you haven’t got a bulb out. If you park in front of a wall or garage, you’ll usually be able to tell right away. But if you can’t, start your car and get out to have a look (when it’s safe to do so of course). You can also get someone to check your brake and reversing lights for you, if you want to be extra thorough.

Blown headlight? Don’t worry – most car manuals will tell you what kind of bulb your car needs. That way you can order one online, or nip to somewhere like Halfords to pick one up. If you can’t fit your bulb yourself, Halford’s also do a bulb fitting service to get your lights back in working order.

With the colder winter months can sometimes come fog – do you know how to turn your fog lights on? Make sure you’ve figured out how to use your fog lights, before you need to use them. That way you won’t have to worry about it when you’re leaving the house on a misty autumnal morning.
