30 miles per hour sign on small country road

What happens if you speed with a Black Box?

If your black box clocks you speeding, we won’t come knocking on your door. That said, incidents of speeding will impact how much you pay for your car insurance.

The safer you drive, the better your driving score will be, which could help you earn a more personalised insurance premium, so it’s worth sticking well within the speed limit.

An Extreme Speeding Event occurs if you exceed the applicable road speed limit by the tolerances listed:

30mph+ in a 20mph limit

43mph+ in a 30mph limit

55mph+ in a 40mph limit

65mph+ in a 50mph limit

75mph+ in a 60mph limit

85mph+ in a 70mph limit

A Severe Extreme Speeding Event occurs if you exceed the applicable road speed limit by the tolerances listed:

40mph+ in a 20mph limit

50mph+ in a 30mph limit

60mph+ in a 40mph limit

70mph+ in a 50mph limit

85mph+ in a 60mph limit

100mph+ in a 70mph limit

We will register speeding events according to severity and you will receive an email to warn you that this has happened.

We issue two warnings if we detect speeding. If it happens a third time, we do reserve the right to cancel your policy. Of course, this will affect your ability to drive and do the things you need to. If you reach an extreme speed, your policy may also be cancelled - even if you’ve not had a warning before.

We do not issue penalty notices or fines, but consistent speeding will impact your score. Your score is what we use to calculate how much you should pay to cover you while on the road, and a higher score could bump up the price you pay. So, if you had a black box installed to try and personalise your premium, it’s not worth pushing the speed limit.

Of course, speed limits aren’t targets to aim for - you need to ensure you’re always driving safely. For example, a tight corner may have a speed limit of 50mph, but this doesn’t mean it’s always safe to go round it at that speed.

What about if you drive abroad?

We understand that speed limits can be different abroad. German autobahns (basically motorways) recommend you drive at speeds of 80 mph maximum, for example. So, if you’re driving on holiday in your car, this won’t impact your score.

Your policy will cover you in the EU, but it’s also worth checking your certificate of insurance before you book any transport for your summer holiday.

Will Black Box data be shared with the Police if you go over the speed limit?

Unless an enquiry is made or you have been involved in a serious incident, we do not share your data with the police. We review your driving once a month and this creates an average when looking at your speed. It’s a good idea to track this yourself, via your supporting online dashboard, which breaks down how you’re doing on the roads.

We recommend always checking the speed limit wherever you are. You should look for signs to confirm how fast you should be driving and make sure you slow down in enough time before a speed change. We want to promote safe driving here at WiseDriving, with personalised insurance premiums for staying within the speed limit.
