Your car’s headlights help you stay safe on the road. Not only do they highlight any obstacles, they also make sure that other cars can see you. You might not have used them much during the summer months, but autumn is the time to make sure they’re in tip-top shape for the months ahead. Dark nights and chilly mornings are guaranteed in winter – so it’s doubly important to make sure you’ve checked that your lights are working as they should be (you can thank us later).
During the winter months, with all of the wet weather and dirt on the roads, your headlights can get mucky. Make sure you give them a clean with a damp cloth, or you can use your usual household glass cleaner if you like.
You’ll also need to check that you haven’t got a bulb out. If you park in front of a wall or garage, you’ll usually be able to tell right away. If you can’t, start your car and get out to have a look (when it’s safe to do so, of course). You can also get someone to check your brake and reversing lights for you.
Blown headlight? Don’t worry – most car manuals will tell you what kind of bulb your car needs. That way, you can order one online, or nip to pick one up. If you can’t fit your bulb yourself, some motor shops offer a bulb fitting service to get your lights back in working order.
