Can a black box find my car if it has been stolen?

We know that having your car stolen isn’t something any of us like to think about, but it’s one of many reasons why it’s so important you have insurance in place.

Having insurance means there is always a security blanket there, ready to help if a thief should target your car - and it’s true that having a black box and telematics insurance can help even further.

Can a Black Box find my car if it's been stolen?

Yes, it can. Not only are these devices amazing when it comes to reducing how much you pay for car insurance but, if your car is stolen, it can actually be tracked via your black box. It’s unlikely the thief will even realise you have a black box in your car and so could be caught red handed if you act quickly.

In fact, black boxes have been saving the day since back in 2014. In that year, a 17-year-old discovered that his brand new Corsa had been stolen from his work car park but, because he had a black box installed, the car was returned to him in just three hours, after the thief abandoned it. Oh, and he also enjoyed cheaper insurance costs as the thief drove the car better than he did, during his 15-minute joy ride! That’s definitely a win.

How does a Black Box track your car?

Your black box uses GPS to find the location of your vehicle - this is usually used to check what roads you have been using and the time of day you have been driving, which can affect your driving score.

What to do if your car has been stolen and has a Black Box installed

First, it’s very important that you contact the police as soon as possible and report your vehicle as stolen. They will give you a crime reference number that you can use when contacting your insurer.

If you have a black box, your insurer can then bring up its location and check where it is and if it is moving.

We will then pass this information onto the police, who will go out and hopefully find the vehicle in a decent state to return to you! You may need to make a claim if your car has been damaged and needs repairs, but this is something insurers can help with.

Having a black box can help increase the chances of a happy ending if something like this happens to you - along with plenty of other benefits, including cheaper insurance and evidence if you ever have an accident and the other driver won’t accept responsibility.
